Setting Resolutions for Your Pet’s Health & Wellness in the New Year

As you set your own New Year’s resolutions for 2023, don’t forget to include your pet! You can create health and wellness resolutions for your pet going into the new year so that you can stay on top of your pet’s health and address his changing health needs. Here are some resolutions you can set for your pet’s health and wellness in the new year.

Get a Veterinary Check Up

The most important way to protect and maintain your pet’s health in the new year is with annual veterinary check ups. During your pet’s check up, the veterinarian will evaluate your pet’s overall health and check your pet’s dental health, weight, and diet. He will let you know if you need to address any problems or make any changes to your pet’s routine throughout the year.

Stay Active

Staying active with your pet will help achieve both of your health and wellness goals throughout the year. Staying active and engaging in play time with your pet will prevent obesity and reduce your pet’s risk of health problems like heart disease, kidney issues, and diabetes. Play time will keep your pet’s mind active and may reduce the risk of dementia. Aim for a long walk each day, or 10-15 minute increments of play time throughout the day.

Stick to a Healthy Diet

You should evaluate your pet’s diet with your veterinarian every few years to make sure it still meets your pet’s needs. As your pet ages, he may have different dietary or nutritional needs that you can address through changes in diet and by giving him supplements. If your pet is 7 years or older, he may need to switch to senior food. For younger pets, make sure that their diet has the appropriate amounts of fat, protein, calories, vitamins, and nutrients to keep them healthy and thriving.

Scheduling yearly veterinary visits should always be a part of your health and wellness goals for your pet. If your pet hasn’t been to the veterinarian in the past 12 months, schedule a visit for the new year.
