Accommodating Your Aging Companion: Exploring Pet Ownership During Senior Pet Month

As your four-legged companion begins to gray, you will notice that their behavior, hobbies, and habits will begin to change as well. As November is Senior Pet Month, we’re here to discuss how to accommodate your aging pet and how to hone in on your senior pet ownership skills with ease.

Assess Your Pet’s Living Space

Your once active pet may begin to move slower and nap more with age. As a pet grows older, their ability to use your home’s stairs or navigate hardwood floors may become more challenging. To ensure safety and comfort for your companion during this transitional stage of their life, there are a few home enhancements you can make, including:

  • Create non-slick surfaces with carpets or toe grips for your pet
  • Place ramps or steps to facilitate access to raised areas
  • Keep their food and water near their favorite lounge area
  • Purchase an orthopedic pet bed to provide their joints and muscles with support

Reevaluate Their Diet

Older pets require more strategic diets. Senior pets often need low-calorie, nutrient-dense foods that support healthy muscles, joints, and digestion. If you have not changed your pet’s diet in a while, it may be time to contact your veterinarian to discuss the best course of action for your pet’s nutritional needs.

Schedule Veterinary Check-Ups

Senior pets are prone to age-related health conditions. While age in itself is not a health concern, it can make your pet more susceptible to various illnesses and chronic diseases. To ensure your pet remains healthy, happy, and safe throughout their golden years, get proactive about scheduling your pet’s veterinary checkups and stay on top of their vaccinations and health needs.

Become the best senior pet owner you can be by contacting your local veterinarian today to schedule your pet’s next check-up.
